Josie SimonBy Josie SimonApril 16, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Getting an HGV license is a crucial step for anyone who wants to drive heavy goods vehicles on UK roads. It is not only a legal requirement but also an essential qualification that opens up numerous job opportunities in the logistics and transportation industry. Obtaining an HGV license requires meeting certain eligibility requirements. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid UK driving license with category B (car) entitlement. Additionally, you will need to pass a medical exam and obtain a D4 medical form from your GP or another registered doctor. They are available in several categories based on the weight and type of vehicle. Categories C (rigid vehicles over 3,500kg) and C+E (articulated vehicles over 3,500kg) are the most common. A vehicle between 3,500kg and 7,500kg or a bus or coach can be classified as Category C1. how to get an hgv license? You must undergo professional training from an approved provider. Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) or GOV.UK has a list of registered trainers. Ensure that the trainer you choose offers high-quality, tailor-made courses.

The next step is to pass the theory test, which consists of two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception videos. You can book your theory test online or by phone through DVSA’s booking service. Make sure to study thoroughly using official learning materials provided by DVSA. Once you have passed the theory test, you can start your practical training sessions. You will learn how to handle an HGV safely, including reversing, parking, and driving in different road conditions. Training durations vary according to the license type and previous experience. After completing your training, you will need to take a practical driving test conducted by a DVSA examiner. The test consists of several modules, such as vehicle safety questions, off-road exercises, and on-road driving. You must demonstrate safe and competent driving skills to pass the test.

Once you have passed both theory and practical tests, you will receive your HGV license from DVSA. You can now legally drive heavy goods vehicles on UK roads within your licensed category. Every five years, you must renew your HGV license. You can do this by completing 35 hours of periodic training every five years or retaking the practical driving test. Once you have obtained your license, you may want to consider additional qualifications that could enhance your career prospects. For example, you could take a Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) course or specialize in driving specific types of vehicles such as hazardous goods or tankers. HGV drivers stay updated with the latest industry regulations and best practices. This includes staying informed about changes in driving laws, road safety guidelines, and vehicle maintenance requirements.
